Large hazardous floods as translatory waves
نویسندگان
چکیده
The theory for non-stationary flow in translatory waves is developed for an inclined plane in a prismatic channel and a funneling channel. The existence of translatory waves traveling over dry land or superimposed on constant flow is established, and the dependance on the initial flow value is discussed. Inherent instabilities of the wave tail are discussed. Data from a CFD simulation of a jokulhlaup (volcanic glacial burst) down the Markarfljot valley in Iceland are shown, and the similarities to the translatory wave established. Geological evidence of such large floods exists, and it is concluded that some historical floods like Katla 1918 have most likely been of this type. It is concluded that in simulation and hazard assessment of great floods, the translatory flow theory has an advantage over estimates based on Manning and alike methods, since the often subjective determination of the Manning n is avoided. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Localization Properties of Data-based Binaural Synthesis including Translatory Head-Movements
Binaural synthesis of plane wave decomposed spherical microphone data using head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) is a well-known approach for auralization. Rotational head movements can be considered by dynamic rotation of the HRTF dataset. Translatory head movements are coped by spatio-temporal shifts of the individual planes waves. This paper analyses this auralization method with respect ...
متن کاملData-based Binaural Synthesis Including Rotational and Translatory Head-Movements
Several approaches to data-based binaural synthesis have been published that are based on the analysis of sound fields captured by spherical microphone arrays. The captured sound field is decomposed into plane waves which are then auralized with head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). So far head-rotations of the listener were considered for dynamic binaural synthesis. We propose an analytic m...
متن کاملDevelopment and Application of a Coastal and Estuarine Morphological Process Modeling System
By means of the physical process-based modeling approache to computing coastal and estuarine hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes, an integrated model system was developed to simulate tides, waves, currents, winds, sediment transport, and morphological changes in coastal and estuarine regions. This paper presents an overview of this integrated morphological process modeling system consistin...

Floods, the most common and hazardous natural event in Sri Lanka, are mainly caused by excessive rainfall received during monsoons resulting from development of low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal. From 2004 to 2014, Sri Lanka faced 23 flood occurrences with over 500 lives being lost and 9 million people affected. These floods caused an economic loss of USD 1 billion, reveals data availab...
متن کاملIndustrial accidents triggered by natural hazards: an emerging risk issue
The threat of natural hazards impacting chemical facilities and infrastructures with the subsequent release of hazardous substances has been recognised as an emerging risk which is likely to be exacerbated by the ongoing climate change. Within the European FP7 project iNTeg-Risk, efforts are dedicated to address the problem of Natech accidents by trying to understand their underlying causes and...
